Hyderabad, April 27: Former Australian captain Steve Waugh is on a private visit to India. In a chat with The Indian Express he talked about the Aussie mindset, on how long should Sachin Tendulkar.
Should Sachin choose between one-day and Test cricket? It is his decision. Of course many Indians want him to play till he's 50. He is a legend of the game, but he can't go on forever. Look what happened to Australia, when Brett Lee was injured. People were worried. Shaun Tait came in and took 23 wickets. Cricket is bigger than any individual.
What went wrong for India in the World Cup?
India looked very flat and dull in the World Cup. I don’t know why. The Australians looked very competitive. Bangladesh were sharp. Even Ireland were energetic.
Do wickets in the Caribbean deserve the criticism they are receiving?
Pitches are the same to everyone. It is always fascinating in India. You have to bowl well to win matches. I think there is too much talk of wickets.
Australia have set a new benchmark.
That is good. That is the way we play. That is the way the West Indies played in the 1980s. We have learnt a lot from the intimidating West Indies. We tried to do that. I would like to see the Indian side do that. That goes like a cycle.
Will you be interested in coaching India?
I don’t want it (the job) now. I have three young children. I am also busy with projects and charities. Coaching is not on my mind now.
What went wrong with Greg Chappell and the Indian team?
I don’t know what happened. Greg has got a lot of knowledge of the game. A coach can’t score runs or take wickets. The players have to do that.
Why did you prefer Tom Moody over Chappell the last time?
Moody was hungry, he was young and he wanted to prove something. He is also excellent in man-management. It was a good choice in my opinion. I think a coach as a person has to look to improve the game and be passionate in what he does.
How is your latest book Out of My Comfort Zone doing?
The 900-page book was a bestseller in Australia. About 2 lakh copies were sold. I have put in a lot of hard work, talked in detail about my career.
