His match winning performance helped England rewrite history in the Ashes
2005 series.
He gave reasons to be compared with Ian Botham when he broke Botham's record
with five sixes in the first innings and a further four in the second innings
of the second Test. He also took 7 wickets from both innings, helping England
to a two run victory.
Taking on the responsibility of team during the February 2006 Test series
with India, this all-rounder put up some fine cricketing on display with
four fifties and 11 wickets. He has however been troubled with injuries,
which meant an exit from the ODI series against Sri Lanka and the Pakistan
Test series in 2006.
It was a humiliating 2006-2007 Ashes series, when he led the side to a 5-0
defeat, England's worst loss since 1921. Flintoff didn't perform too well,
ridden with injury worries. He bounced back when England won 2-0 in the
tri-series ODI tournament finals, taking three wickets in the first match
and restricting the Aussies to just 10 runs from his 5 overs.
Vice-captain Flintoff has not had a successful innings in his previous World
Cups, in 1999 and 2003. And the World Cup has eluded England more than once.
England will have their hopes pinned on this man for a turnaround.
