Mumbai and Kolkata may be the only two teams not to go past the league stage in the first two editions, but their first clash in the tournament has been sought after. With celebrities in the stands for the Knight Riders — arguably the most glamorous outfit of the tournament — set to garner equal attention as those out in the middle, the crowd at the Brabourne Stadium will be looking forward to some serious star-gazing.
West Indian cricket has been on a well-publicised and rapid downward curve in the last decade or so but cricketers from the Caribbean have been in high demand for teams plying their trades in the various T20 tournaments around the world, including the IPL.
And it is the triumvirate of Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo who will be looked at as key players for their respective teams. While the 30-year-old Gayle has hardly set the IPL on fire for the Knight Riders; Mumbai Indians are still waiting for their costliest buy, Pollard — who did hit a huge six against Bangalore — to make his much-awaited impact.
Mind-games haven’t featured too highly in the bonhomie that surrounds the IPL. But Mumbai Indians coach Robin Singh may have begun the trend as he underplayed the hype over Gayle. “We are not too bothered about who’s playing and are concentrating more on our game. There are many big hitters in the tournament,” he said.
