New Delhi: A plot to abduct cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Saurav Ganguly did not fructify in 2002 as the alleged Harkat-ul-jehadi Islami (HUJI) terrorists assigned the task could not get logistical support, the prosecution today claimed in a Delhi court.

Starting advancing of final arguments in the case in which six alleged HUJI terrorists were arrested for conspiring to kidnap the cricketers, the prosecutor cited the chargesheet and said “the plan could not succeed as the accused could not get logistic support in time to execute their design.”

The prosecutor claimed before Additional Sessions Judge Pinki that the terrorist outfit was formed by Pakistan national Maulana Masood Azhar, a terrorist who was freed by India in exchange of passengers of hijacked Indian Airlines aircraft IC-814.

Besides the six terrorist, key accused Jalaluddin, who was declared proclaimed offender during the trial, had also planned to assassinate A P J Abdul Kalam, the then Scientific Advisor to the Defence Ministry.

He allegedly wanted to secure the release of their two jailed members, the prosecutor said.

The arguments remained inconclusive and would continue on February 9. The hearing in the case was stuck up for almost two months as the ASJ was not granted sanction to hear cases lodged under special statutes like the POTA.
