Melbourne: In what would come as a huge relief for Andrew Symonds, a specialist in Melbourne has said the embattled all-rounder does not need surgery to heal a career-threatening knee injury as he is recovering fast.

Cricket Australia doctor Trefor James said Symonds may soon return to competitive cricket.

Symonds met with a specialist in Melbourne and was relived to hear that he does not have to go under the knife to heal the injured knee.

"Andrew has pinched inflamed tissue in the joint of his right knee. If the speed of his recovery continues, he may be available for selection in the Ford Ranger Cup final this Sunday," James was quoted as saying by the 'Herald Sun'.

Symonds was ruled out of today's Ford Ranger Cup clash against South Australia at the Adelaide Oval.
