South Africa coach wary of 'angry' Australia

Johannesburg: South Africa coach Mickey Arthur warned on Monday that his team will face an ‘angry’ Australia when the fierce rivals resume hostilities in February.

Arthur and his squad returned home this weekend to a heroes welcome at a packed OR Tambo airport after winning a Test and ODI series in Australia for the first time.

Ricky Ponting-led Australia launch their revenge mission with a Test at the Wanderers in Johannesburg from February 26 followed by two more in Durban and Cape Town, two Twenty20 and five ODIs.

The Graham Smith-captained Proteas triumphed 2-1 in the Tests, and 4-1 in the ODIs despite the absence of their injured skipper, while Australia won both Twenty20 games.

Australia remain the top ranked Test team, thanks to their win in Sydney where Smith retired hurt in the first innings while on 30 and also batted in the second innings under considerable pain.

But South Africa have overtaken Australia at the top of the ODI rankings after winning in Sydney, Adelaide and Perth following a narrow second-match reverse in Hobart.

However, Arthur insisted there was a 'work-in-progress' tag attached to an ODI squad led by Johan Botha in the absence of Smith, who flew from Cape Town to join the Johannesburg celebrations.

"Never in my wildest dreams did I think we were going to pull off a 4-1 series win. After our ODI losses in England last year, we returned home through the back door. We have surpassed what we though we could do, but we know the Australians are going to be angry and they are going to come back hard when they arrive in South Africa.

"South Africa are favourites to win the return series. It is going to be harder to win at home, but I believe we can do it and retain our No. 1 status. We have a big eye on the 2011 World Cup. Most of the young players have been travelling with the team for some time, they know their roles and when the opportunity comes they are able to take it," said Arthur.

The coach lauded the Proteas for winning over the Australian public with their humility in victory, saying hundreds lined the streets of Perth on Sunday to bid the team goodbye.
