New Delhi, January 10:: Delhi Police is suspecting that some cricket matches involving South Africa (SA) were fixed even in 1996, four years before the in-famous match fixing broke out, and it is likely to "talk" to former SA wicket-keeper and senior ICC official Dev Richardson in this regard.

Sources said the Delhi Police crime branch suspects that the match fixing took place as early as in 1996 in some of the matches and the number of SA players were involved in it.

In this connection, sources said, the investigators will "talk" to Richardson, the then wicket-keeper in a bid to "dig deep" into the matter.

Richardson is currently serving as General Manager (Operation) in the International Cricket Council.

The match fixing scandal came to light in 2000 when Delhi Police intercepted telephone calls between cricket bookies including Sanjeev Chawla and then SA captain Hansie Cronje.

Delhi Police has on December 12 last year questioned South African Nicky Boje -- a left arm bowler who retired from international cricket and is currently playing in the rebel ICL League.

Boje has denied his involvement in the betting racket as his counterpart Herschelle Gibbs, who was questioned in 2006.

Police had registered a case on May 14, 2000 charging Cronje, Gibbs and Boje for accepting money from bookies and throwing away matches. It was alleged that Cronje, who later died in a plane crash, struck the deal with and persuaded other players to under perform.

After a complete enquiry in South Africa, Cronje was banned for life, while Gibbs faced six-month-ban and a hefty fine.
