Mohali: Wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik was on Sunday called in to cover for openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir, who sustained injuries during India's third cricket one-dayer against Australia in New Delhi.

"Dinesh Karthik will be joining the Indian team in Mohali," BCCI secretary N Srinivas said in a statement. India won the match by six wickets but Sehwag and Gambhir picked up injuries and whether they play in the fourth one-dayer here tomorrow would be decided in the morning.

"Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir sustained injuries during the third match of the Hero Honda Cup 2009, played at Delhi on October 31. A final decision on their availability for the fourth match, to be played at Mohali on November 2 will be taken on the morning of the game," the statement read.

Sehwag was hit on his foot by a Peter Siddle yorker in the eighth over which had him in pain, needing the physio's attention.

Gambhir, on the other hand, was struck on the neck by a Ricky Ponting pull. The opener didn't field for the rest of Australia's innings. India currently lead the series 2-1.

Why Dinesh Karthik ?
by ManishJha DSSW on 2009-11-02 10:09:43.436148+05:30
Why Dinesh Karthik..wat he had done previously ??? why nor Robin Uthappa/ Rohit Sharma or Cheteswer Pujara...we must bring some specialist batsman as we already have two rokkie batsman(Kohli n Raina) in the fourteen..Is it a coincidence that Karthik belong to the state of chief selector K.Srikanth or selection based purely on merit...

Sehwag why uncertain

It will be ideal to have Sachin and Gambhir open the innings followed by Dravid. He is the best player for number 3 position and will be quite useful when the going gets tough.

Sehwag why uncertain

Now that Sehwag need some break, he should be given some rest so that he can be prepared for the next world game. Why not bring in Dravid to fill the gap. He has done well recently and a wall for the team.
