Sachin, Bhajji say thanks to NSG commandos

Press Trust of India

New Delhi: In a bid to honour the courage and sacrifice of National Security Guard commandos during the Mumbai terror attacks, Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh spent a day at the NSG headquarters at Manesar near Gurgaon (Haryana).

During their stay, Tendulkar and Harbhajan also tried their hand at the tough 26 obstacle training course of the commandos, which includes jumping from heights, climbing heights, running through large distances etc.

The cricketers also witnessed the Anti Terrorist Conditioning Course, which the commandos undergo in almost real life terror situations, complete with fire, smoke and live bullets.

The duo also interacted with the commandos who participated in the 26/11 Mumbai terror operation. During an interaction with the commandos, an emotional Tendulkar said, "Without a doubt it's you guys who are the real heroes, we just play cricket, you play with your life so that we are secure, I salute and your families because they have an important role in your sacrifice."

"It's truly an honour for both of us to be here and see what all of you are doing. Your hard work and contribution to the nation can never be compared with that of an actor or a sportsman. Although we always give our best to keep the nation flag high but our contribution in front of yours is much less in comparison to your contribution to our Nation. We are the role models for many people but we are proud to say that you are our role models."

During their visit at NSG headquarters, Tendulkar and Harbhajan also spent some time with the wife and children of Late Havaldar Gajendra Singh and the parents of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, the two NSG commandos who lost their lives in the Mumbai siege.

The two cricketers made their way to meet Sandeep's parents who were also present at the NSG headquarters at the same time. Sachin offered his condolences to Sandeep's father and said, "You are a brave man, and your sacrifice supreme".

Harbhajan saluted the commandos and said, "I always wanted to serve the nation like a solider does, like you all do. But I suppose, I never had that kind of passion. As Sachin said we can't even think of comparing ourselves with you all. I think you guys are the real heroes. I just want to stand-up and salute all of you. I want to say a big thanks to all of you and your family for protecting us."

This is my comment to all those who commented for the said article. The history is evident that in Indians have very short memory and especially for the the sacrifices of the armed forces .. who cares? its very easy to say thanks and let me tell you that after few months people will forget who is karkare and what is NSG? thanks to media that at least it is making people aware of the roles of the forces and their sacrifices time to time to the people of our country. But what about the families left behind? what is their fate? have you seen the Movie Border which has reflected the fate of the families of the soldiers. Oflate parents are not advising their children not to join forces because our country is thankless.. have you ever seen a soldier travelling on emergency leave in third class compartment throughout near the bathroom space? this is what we can offer to our soldier.. its really frustrating. People need forces only when there is a fear of getting killed by enemy.. Jai hind..

Sachin, Bhajji - empty talk
by Ron on 2009-01-26 17:35:04.607146+05:30
Indian cricketers are experts in empty talk. If BCCI were to announce that the 10 percent of the players annual fee will be donated to the NSG heroes then these very cricketers will protest and block the move.

This was an excellent gesture

Friends, what I feel is both Sachin and Bhajji did is right. At least they had that courtesy to share the feelings. Am sure when the team wins in Cricket, we call them Heros. LIke Schin and Bhajji, when they saw what the cammandos are doing they realised. How many of us know what the Cammandoes undergo. How many of us consoled Sandeep's parents. Sometimes, its not the money that counts always. Even few words from the heart gives much relief than getting money. In fact I feel they did the right thing. Our NSG's salute their superiors and am sure first time some one might have saluted them from the citizens of India.
