Pune, Kochi named new IPL teams

Agencies

Posted: Mar 22, 2010 at 0813 hrs IST

Chennai: Sahara bagged Pune while little known Rendezvous Sports World Limited clinched Kochi as the Indian Premier League today unveiled two new teams joining the cash-awash Twenty20 league.

IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi said Sahara Adventure Sports Group made an identical USD 370 million bid for three cities - Ahmedabad, Nagpur and Pune. "They made the highest bid for all three cities and were asked to choose one of those cities. So Pune will be the home ground of their team," Modi told reporters.

Rendezvous Sports World Limited made the second highest bid on Sunday but their offer of USD 333.33 million was enough to land the Kochi franchise, Modi said.

"In all, five groups qualified for the bid and I hope they make good business," Modi said. He also made it clear that there was no plans to have a second IPL abroad.

"I'm always misquoted by the media. This is Indian Premier League and there is no plans to have a second IPL abroad. "We also have no plans to expand further immediately. In fact I don't foresee an expansion in many many years to come but then you never know," he added.

Apart from the two successful bidders, other groups which took part in the bidding included Adani Groups and VC Digital Solution (Videocon).

Anyone can sense politics in whole episode!

Rajasthan Royals have a lot of Gujarat players and also, they are using Ahmedabad as their home ground now (instead of Jaipur). Probably, this helps earn ticket & sponsership revenues from both Rajasthan as well as Gujarat! As you may know, Gujarat had one of the highest TRPs in IPL1 (that helped such high valuations of the IPL teams). So, if Ahmedabad has its own IPL team, owners of Rajasthan Royals will lose significantly. And, who owns Rajasthan Royals? I feel, it would have been retendered again, had Adani won Ahmedabad team in second auction also!

Philanthropy anyone
by Abhijit Sahani on 2010-03-22 03:53:10.608163+05:30
Trying to be a devil's advocate - Philanthropy is not an attribute that can be associated with us Indians. We are willing to spend millions of rupees/dollars on religious activities, building monuments for living politicians etc. But not a single paisa on Philanthropy. I wonder how much charity could have been done with that kind of money? Building sustainable housing for the poor (how about relocating Dharavi residents?), improving sanitation in districts are villages, repairing or building new schools and the list goes on. Instead this huge amount of money is being spent on buying a team.
