Cricket Australia has plans of starting a high-profile Twenty20 League of its own and has approached the BCCI to allow its players for the event.
IPL Commissioner and BCCI Vice-President Lalit Modi, who is closely watching the developments on this front, said he had already cleared top Indian cricketers to play for Australian state teams if they wanted to.
"We are keenly watching that and are most supportive of that. The Australian cricket board has been most supportive of the Indian cricket board," Modi was quoted as saying by the 'Herald Sun' on Friday.
"They have asked us already if we would release our players for that and we said, yes, we would release our players for that. They have been gracious enough to release their players for us," he added.
Modi said the revamped Australian competition could feature teams in a traditional state format or see them owned privately, but salary caps are unlikely to compare to the IPL.
"It may not be on the same scale as the IPL. It may not be eight, 10 or 12 teams, but it may be six teams in Australia... We understand they are looking at a franchise model, developing other models, too," he said.
Modi scoffed at suggestions that the BCCI was a superpower just because it generates about 80 per cent of the game's revenue.
"Just because our market is dictating we get a higher price, it doesn't mean we rule the world. You have to keep in mind we have a billion people, you have 16-18 million," he said.
