Former Aussie players hit out at selectors

Melbourne: Former Australia player Simon O'Donnell launched a scathing attack on selectors for resting skipper Ricky Ponting, asking them to "grow up" and advised Cricket Australia to get rid of some "coat pullers" for the sake of the team.

"If you told (former captain) Allan Border to have a spell, he would have put one right on the end of your nose.

The selectors ought to grow up a bit ... and tell those fitness blokes who run around in sneakers and tight shorts to get out of the road," O'Donnell said.

"The sooner they - whether it's the Australians selectors or Cricket Australia - get rid of some of the coat pullers that go along with the Australian cricket team (the better)," O'Donnell said.

The former all-rounder advocated the need to give the skipper more say in decision making and did not spare even coach Tim Nielsen.

"When there's a captain, let him do his job. The rest of them, zip their lip and keep out of the road. I thought that was a complete and utter overreaction from people who are having a say in decisions.

"There is a percentage of those decisions that Tim Nielsen should pull his head in as well," O'Donnell was quoted as saying by the 'The Daily Telegraph'.

Former opener Michael Slater and former Test selector John Benaud echoed similar sentiments.

"For every reason, it was wrong (resting Ponting)," Slater said.

"It is fair enough to rest players, but you get yourself into trouble when you get too specific and nominate an amount of matches," Benuad said.

However, CA chief executive James Sutherland does not see any wrong in the decision-making.

"There's no perfect answer. But we're very comfortable with the process they're going through and how they're (making) decisions," he said.

I love to see Australian cricketers fighting amongst themselves like this after a spate of losses. They have always been so arrogant and overconfident besides being shamelessly dishonest. Now that they are at the receiving end of some confusion, opponents should make full use of this shortcoming. Let's see how they wriggle themseleves out of this mess. Hope it stays on for a while and teaches those upstart kangaroos the lesson they fully deserve.

I dont agree. What would have been their comments if Australia had again lost to NZ. Always easy to comment on hindsight.
