The air over the dispute is expected to clear in the coming days with the BCCI likely to agree to a few of Sahara’s demands, including the one about increasing the number of foreign players in their playing XI. With their skipper Yuvraj Singh ruled out, Sahara had asked for this special allowance.
Interestingly, Roy said that the final call about Sahara’s return to the fold will be taken by the team’s new skipper and mentor Sourav Ganguly. “He will decide what we will do.” Later he went on to add, “I am interested in the people of Pune and my players. I don’t want them to sit out.”
Earlier in the day Srinivasan said he was surprised by Sahara’s decision. “We only have perceptional differences and any dialogue is welcome. We have a long 11 years relationship with Sahara and I was surprised with their decision. We had a long conversation on Friday evening and he expressed that he was hurt. But we never expected them to take this decision.”
‘Pullout was big surprise to us’
Former South African paceman Allan Donald, appointed as bowling coach of the Pune Warriors, said it will be a “pity” if the reconciliation efforts between the BCCI and his IPL side fail. “We hope something can come of it. I met some really good people there and it will be a pity if it doesn’t work out. It was an enormous surprise to all of us,” Donald said. “We had absolutely no idea. The night before we were up until past midnight, discussing which players we were going to buy. We would have got all of them,” Donald told Cricinfo.
Donald was signed as coach by the Pune Warriors as bowling coach at the start of the year and was part of a training camp conducted in Pune last week.
“Ashish Nehra and Murali Kartik were there and a couple of the new guys like Manish Pandey. We met some of the younger guys and I can tell you there’s some good talent. We also conducted a trial, which was really good,” he said.
