What led to Ganguly's omission from ODI squad?

Adelaide, January 23:: An observation by Indian team's trainer Gregory King coupled with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his deputy Yuvraj Singh's opinions might have prompted the selectors to drop Sourav Ganguly from the one-day squad for the forthcoming cricket tri-series.

King, who keeps a tab on the fitness of Indian team, apparently believed that Ganguly's lower half could give him trouble before long and this went a long way in sealing the fate of the pugnacious left-hander.

The selectors -- Dilip Vengsarkar and Co. -- including Ranjib Biswal and Venkatapathy Raju on the present tour -- were keen to have Ganguly retained as late as on the second day of the Perth Test last week.

They even toyed with the idea of recalling Rahul Dravid, basing their argument that Rohit Sharma and Robin Uthappa had not done much of note in the domestic circuit lately.

Dhoni though had different ideas and informed the selectors that it did not serve much purpose to include a player who could break down at some stage of the one-day tour.

The argument against Ganguly also included the points that he was not of much use either in the outfield or infield and his fitness really became an issue after 40 overs.

Vengsarkar, it is learnt, made a pointed reference about the runs which Ganguly still provides to the team.

what is hapening in indian ..god knows ..in the name of modern cricket , talent is being matryed and that too like sourav and dravid. If they loss in fitness then theyprovide plenty of runs.......which a feilder cannot provide...if team wants feilders and quik runners between wickets then were is Muhammad Kaif.......Dhoni should leran that his days are few as he has not got talent it is just fluke which clicks only on indian pitches what about his own performance in this tour in three testmatches he has miserably failed.....30-40 runs didnot count in test matches........

Ganguly has been sacked at the advise of Dhoni, who himself has neither batting skill nor footwalk what a pitty for Indian cricket. If any one really wants to batter Indian cricket then please drop Dhoni from team, Vengsarkar from selection panel, and sarad power from BCCI.DADA JINDABAD.

Saurav's omission.
by K. N. Krishna Moorthy on 2008-01-23 10:56:28.814023+05:30
We have always lived in the past. What a limited-overs match needs, is athleticism. And this, Saurav and Dravid cannot show more than the youngsters. Ganguly and Dravid may be good for Tests, but not for limited-overs match. And it will not be far ahead, when Sachin also makes his exit from this form of the game.

Most of us are missing the point. "Who" or "what" led to Saurav's exclusion is not as much the issue- one can debate till eternity given the fact it was not transparently done, and all cricketing facts weighed heavily in Saurav's favour. What BCCI(as custodians of Indian cricket) needed to do was ensure that Saurav was taken into confidence about the issues with his selection, given a suitable timeframe to mull over, and having done that an honorable exit could have been ensured. The stigma of 'being dropped' is too big for a Dhoni or Yuvraj(or,even Vengsarkar) to hand over to the finest Indian captain...

Juvenile decision

Who's decision was it to appoint that punk, Dhoni, as the skipper! Who are Dhoni and Yuvraj to decide on Ganguly when they themselves are hanging on to their places by the skin of the teeth!!
