Top Australians turn down IPL offers

Reuters

Sydney, February 19:: A handful of leading Australians, including middle-order batsman Michael Clarke and strike bowler Mitchell Johnson, have turned down offers to play in the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL) to focus on their international careers.

Australia's IPL agent, Neil Maxwell, released a brief statement on Tuesday confirming 13 Australians had signed up for the Twenty20 tournament starting in April.

The list included current skipper Ricky Ponting, soon to be retired vice-captain Adam Gilchrist and the trio of Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Justin Langer, who all retired over a year ago.

Most of Australia's one-day squad signed on the dotted line ahead of this week's player "auction" but there were some notable absentees, including Clarke, Johnson, Brad Haddin, Stuart Clark and Jason Gillespie.

The Australians were only cleared to play in the tournament this week after their national body reached an agreement with IPL over a sponsorship dispute which had threatened their participation.

Ponting had said he feared players would turn their backs on their national teams if they were prevented from joining the IPL.

He called on the International Cricket Council (ICC) to create a separate window for the tournament to avoid a clash with regular international tours.

International cricket has already been hit by a series of high-profile retirements in the past month involving players who have signed with the IPL or the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL).

Australia have warned their players not to sign with the ICL, saying it would threaten their chances of re-selection for the national side.

Australian players who have signed for IPL:

Brett Lee, David Hussey, Mike Hussey, Matthew Hayden, Andrew Symonds, Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Ponting, Nathan Bracken, Cameron White, Simon Katich, Shane Warne, Justin Langer, Glenn McGrath.

IPL - A useless idea.
by S.Panicker on 2008-02-22 09:08:52.583498+05:30
The concept of IPL is just a show off. In a country where millions are still under poverty this seems to be a nasty money laundering business. Will these cricketr's ever spend a single penny to serve those poor. If at all they do they do it for tax savings.

ipl is nothing but but a clap-trap
by amlan k roy on 2008-02-20 04:04:52.60259+05:30
ipl is a total one-night affair, clap-trap, flash-in the pan theme, with zero artisitic, sportsmanship value to any real sportsman. Nothing but money and entertainment, that will give people like Dhoni and CO some star status in our dilapidated mind-set. No class, no art, no value.

Australian players turn down IPL
by Tina on 2008-02-20 03:31:48.078235+05:30
I am sure no Indians would want them either. They are a bunch of snobs full of arrogance. Only one to be favored by the Indians would be Adam Gilchrist He is a nice person and we would like to see more of him with IPL.

Losers!
by Hemant on 2008-02-20 03:01:26.676211+05:30
The guys who did not sign on the dotted lines will fade away. These guys are essentially the ones who have an Indian phobia. Fraidy cats. I hope when they change their minds, the IPL rejects them.

IPL will flop
by sujit on 2008-02-19 22:03:11.640582+05:30
IPL will be total flop. Indian public do not like to watch cricket where national teams are not playing. Such club cricket with mix players will not attract much public. Sponsors will also back out seeing public non-response. Only loser will be franchaisee who bought teams spending hefty money.
