Symonds mistook antics for racism: Pawar

Melbourne, October 18:: BCCI President Sharad Pawar believes Andrew Symonds mistook hostile crowd antics for racism and insisted that the episode would not sour Indian Cricket Board's relation with its Australian counterpart.

Reacting to reports that Symonds had been subjected to monkey chants in Vadodara, Nagpur and in Mumbai too on Wednesday night, Pawar assured that International Cricket Council's Anti-Racism Code would be strictly adhered to but he also felt that it was not a case of racism.

"We respect that we have to protect the individual player. There is a complaint and we will take the appropriate action," Pawar was quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald.

"I believe this is a misunderstanding; a language issue. There are many languages spoken in India, and I don't understand many of them myself.

"Still, it is the responsibility of the Indian board to execute that (the ICC's anti-racism code). There have already been steps taken," he added.

He also dismissed the idea that the incident would have any adverse effect on the relationship between the cricket boards of both the countries.

"This will not at all affect our relationship with Cricket Australia. We have a very strong relationship and we are hoping that will continue," he asserted.

After Pawar announced that BCCI would look into the complaint, the local media here dubbed his comments as "back down by the BCCI", pointing out that the Board had initially refused to acknowledge the incident in Vadodara.

According to media reports in Australia, Match Referee Chris Broad has written to the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirming racial comments were indeed hurled by the crowd during the fifth match at Vadodara.

Symonds and the entire Australian team are miffed with the Indian crowd and skipper Ricky Ponting too lashed out at Wednesday's hostile spectators at the Wankhede Stadium after the match, which the visitors lost, by two wickets.

"Some of the other stuff that went on was totally unnecessary. I just hope that it does not happen again at another cricket venue that I play in because it leaves a bad taste in everybody's mouth," Ponting said.

The daily also admitted that reports of an Australian cameraman capturing racial crowd behaviour during the Nagpur ODI was actually a rumour.

C alling someone "sob" or "fo" is equally a racists attributes and repeating the same agains and again on the field which are attributed to the opponents are m ore racistrs than calli9ng somebody a monkey. If it was matter of give and take Symond and Ponting and his other friends in Hayden and Gilchirst deserved being called what Harbhajansingh calleld them

Why cricketers make an issue on this? They can as well ignore such abuses as it is very difficult to isolate the offender .

ausies are hypocrates... I am sure when in hindi it hays... Maa ki Jai... sounds like monkey in english... but this chants means Hail the goddesss and religious people do that when they want game to go in their favour.... All this means, they are praying their god. Wake up hypocrate aussies... you cannnot stop someone from praying their god. It is racist to stop someone praying from their god because they are non chritian...When Chris says... The first step to fixing the problem is to admit it exists, .... Do you admit that Aussies have made records with help of umpirings? If so, why not to delete those records ?Stephan... It's high time time all those uneducated fools who think sledging is racist.... Welll this is australian belief... AND...calling someone of African decent a monkey IS RACIST! ... That is also an australian belief... AND to call someone BASTARD.... is normal.... That is also an australian belief... Why dont you look situation from the INDIAN point of view?.... I am still agree that its not decent behaviour to call someone monkey or bastard.... but different people coming from different country has different way to rect to different situatiion... For international event...you cannot expect things to go Australian way.... calling money shouldnt allowed.... than calling someone BASTART is even mor eoffensive....

Nash ...learn what he said not praying to a god but calling Andrew a mother F#$ker (TERI MAKI), and to say Australian records have been made with umpires cheating to win the games you fool, so stop calling Australia cheats and learn to play better, you saying Australia only wins because the umpires cheat is so stupid you make yourself look more foolish than the lowest dalit, by saying this you are calling every umpire who has umpired an Australian game in the last 20 years a lire and cheat, wake up to yourself.

Umpires
by Adi on 2008-03-07 08:08:03.571824+05:30
Lee their is no doubt that the umpires have helped australia to win matches(at least a few). If not how did they lose the one day international series as soon as a neutral umpire was brought in.

Just not cricket ...
by Chris Chan on 2008-01-15 04:04:51.992592+05:30
Everyone at the grounds knows what happened... The electronic scoreboard instructed those responsible to stop, and the world has seen the video evidence, yet the BCCI still tries to deny the incidents ever occured !?The first step to fixing the problem is to admit it exists, then take action against those responsible...

cricket..a money machine..
by paddy on 2008-03-30 02:53:57.745777+05:30
Folks, the indian BCCI is run by a typically corrupt shameless indian politician. Earliear Dalmia, now Pawar with no knowledge of cricket. Look what happened to last world cup media rights interpretation. The british cricket decency has gone to the dogs. The Austrailian board needs to learn to control their player's behaviour on the field or their legacy of bad behaviour will be perpetuated to all cricketing nations. Now I am afraid the corrupt BCCI's money power is going to do the talking the world over for the time being unless the rumblings of BCCI's money launders like Dalmiya
