Symonds gagged from speaking on racism row

Sydney, January 7:: Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds, at the centre of the racism row that led to the ban of Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, has been gagged by Cricket Australia and ICC from commenting on the heated topic in his newspaper column.

Explaining reasons behind not carrying the column, the daily said, "Symonds was gagged by Cricket Australia and threatened with censure by the ICC."

The Sunday Telegraph was not granted access to him despite Symonds' contractual arrangement to write a weekly column through the season, the daily wrote.

Interestingly, Cricket Australia's media office offered to provide a column written by one of their employees under Symonds' name, dealing only with matters relating to play and not the "monkey slur" racism crisis, but the daily rejected the offer.

"Our readers do not deserve to be subject to such censorship," the newspaper said.

"A column written by a CA employee under Symonds' name would not fit in with the principles of this newspaper or this company. Nor would it be of any value to readers.

When times get tough, cricket officialdom goes missing, preferring to protect revenue at all costs, way over and above any obligation to inform the great fans of this country, without whom there would be no game at all," it said.

Symonds gagged from speaking on racism row
by Hemant on 2008-01-08 07:49:10.324131+05:30
Why gag Symond's column now? Is this supposed to somehow "appease" India? Yes I said India... and not Indian cricketers. Indian cricketers while representing their country India are INDIA. When one of the eleven on the field is discriminated against all eleven are discriminated against. When the eleven are discriminated against you automatically discriminate against INDIA. If money is an issue for Pawar, I will personally contribute to the best of my ability. Set up a fund and the Indians will foot the bill. BUT remember this... there is a rider... the Indian team will not tour Australia or play Australia anywhere in the world as long as Ponting, Gilchrist, Symonds and Clarke are a part of that team. That is the way the cookie crumbles... take it or leave it. Show some spine Pawar... we are not expecting anything worthwhile from you... for the sake of your country prove us wrong. Take a stand and then don't water it down (like the government at the center under the tutelage of Sonia... yes you lost all your self respect when you did that).

ICC shows the real racism
by Satya on 2008-01-08 01:31:37.268622+05:30
How come calling someone monkey is racism? Are Australians Monkey race? If an Australian player called an Indian player donkey, does that means Indians are donkey race? It is simply stupidity. It is the ICC played the true racism by banning the Indian player. The word monkey, donkey don't connote any race. BCCI must fight it back, and not bow-down before real racist ICC.

Kangaroo
by Mohammd Rafiq on 2008-01-08 03:01:35.704271+05:30
Look at photographs of Andrew Symonds. If you call him Kangaroo, cricket lovers will call you silly becoz he looks like monkey and it will also be an insult to Kangaroo too. It appears that it was ponting idea to throw Harbhajan out of match on false pretenses and Andrew Symonds is Bali ka Bakra.

ICC has once again failed in resloving a crises amicably. It happened at world cup finals(2007), the Darrel-Pak Issue, and now this proves to be the third rose in its most prestigious bouquet

Symonds and racism
by Ravindra on 2008-01-07 21:15:11.040721+05:30
Symonds seems to be crying racism at the drop of a hat. He is probably feels insecure and he himself feels from within inside that he doesnot racially belong to the group he is in.He provokes the opposition players but when he gets back, he calls it racism. He needs some psycharist treatment to get over his insecurity. Why is it that these racism complaints only come from him. This is not the first time tht a team of "Whites" as a "Black" player. England had them in the past. There were no such complaints before.
