Sydney Row: ‘That’s just the way Australia operates’

New Delhi, January 25:: Former Australian coach John Buchanan sees nothing wrong in the ‘aggressive’ attitude of the world champions and feels it is the Indian team which should have been better prepared for hostile episodes like the Sydney furore Down Under.

"In Australia, we tend to test people and observe how they respond. So we have a go at the people and then rate them as good, bad or midway," Buchanan said in an interview in the latest issue of The Week, which hits the stands on Saturday.

"If someone is not good enough to take it, we give more stick. That is just the way Australia operates. I would expect India to understand that as some of the current players have been here once or twice before. They should have explained to their team about how the rival team works off and on the field," he added.

The Sydney Test, which was marred by poor umpiring and racism row involving Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds, also led to widespread criticism of Australia's overtly aggressive approach.

The controversy put India's tour in jeopardy before the ICC stepped in to broker peace between the two sides.

But Buchanan felt the matter was a minor one before being blown out of proportion by a hyperactive media.

"Most Aussies are aggressive in the way they play cricket. However, I think the media has exaggerated notions of aggression and racism beyond that was acceptable before," he said.

Buchanan felt cultural differences between the two teams also had a part to play in the controversy snowballing into a crisis.

the buch with 2 left hands

Well, Mr. Buch, if thats the way the aussies behave then let there be racism, and live with it. Of course there is a thin line between racism and sledging, but your line might be different from ours. So live with it and dont call it racism. The other thing is, yes, if thats the way the aussies are (bad behavioured and ill-brought-up) them let them also stick with the bad behaviour from the Indians. You were successful as a coach because of you mind games, but nothing to do with the technicality of cricket because you haven't held a bloody cricket bat in your live. So I would call you a winner of the game as coach, but a looser at the game. Please stop your verbal diarrhoea mate. Get on with retired life.

Deal with it!

Dear Buchanan. My answer to your explanation of Australia's behaviour is, "Get a grip". I say "This is how India will behave" and now "Deal with it". Where do you think the Cricket will end up? In the gutters. Better come to your senses and realize that the behaviour of your team is not acceptable and other countries are equally or more powerful to teach you the lesson. I am glad this incident brought the Aussies to their knees in their behaviour. I hope the rest of the world create the same debacle to weed out the monkeys from the games. If you want to say something, be fair. Why are you not condemning Ponting for bringing up the Monkey issue. These guys are right. You are the biggest hypocrats in the world. I am not sure if you realize it but your words mean nothing. Every country is very happy that somone stood up to your so called aggression. How does it feel? Nice.. It hurts doesn't it? Welcome to the club mate.

Hypocracy
by Satish on 2008-01-26 03:58:57.310153+05:30
Buchanan, Here are questions for you. Why do world have to play by your rules of aggrasiveness? Why can't you play by other countries' rules? What happened to aggrasiveness when you were rightfully called monkey? Why did the cry baby run for daddy? Why not a single word about Ponting reporting Harbhajam? I think Australians may get a nickname "White Monkeys". You've asked for it. As you said, when someone can't take the aggrasson, you give more, now why did Ponting ran like he had diahrrea? If you can't take it from others, just shut up and play the game like other gentlemen do. Teach the same to the bigots like Chappels.

Setting your own standards - get it back!!!

Mr Buchanan and the Aussie's - if you think you have a right to set your own standards in a gentleman's game, rest of the world will set their own standards too. If you can't bear it, I am sorry - the world has the same right to call you all "big monkeys" !!!
