Racism Row: 'Australians are playing mind games'

Sydney, January 5:: Indian cricket team manager Chetan Chauhan described Australia's complaint of racial abuse against Harbhajan Singh as a ‘mind game’ and said the move was aimed at removing the ace spinner from the bowling attack.

Chauhan said Harbhajan had not uttered anything ‘wrong’ during his altercation with Andrew Symonds and the Australians were raking up such issues only because they cannot accept India's new found aggression.

"Harbhajan has not uttered anything wrong. The Australians are playing mind games. We have got the hearing tomorrow and we will argue our case", Chauhan said.

Asked how Harbhajan had reacted to the whole issue, the former Indian opener said, "He is okay. Such things happen on the ground. We are prepared for the hearing."

On Australian opener Matthew Hayden's assertion that Australia have a strong case, Chauhan said," They will definitely say that. He (Harbhajan) has troubled them the most. They would definitely want him out of the bowling attack."

"We also have a strong case. We will back him," Chauhan told a TV channel.

Chauhan said the Australians were not used to teams retaliating to their sledging and were therefore finding it hard to digest.

"In the past, retaliation had not come. The Indians had accepted their sledging. Now they are finding it hard as the Indians have started retaliating," he added.

India in Sydney
by John on 2008-01-12 02:13:00.237099+05:30
I see that India want to back out if the situation doesn't go the way they want. Good idea. They were very disappointing to watch. They were totally outclassed in Melbourne and crumbled within a day in Sydney. Leaving before they have to face an all out pace attack in Perth is probably the kindest thing that could happen.

Aussie Mind Games
by Kris iyer on 2008-01-07 09:04:55.738745+05:30
Cricket played by the present Aussie team is on the basis of "total war". Mr. Chauhan is correct in describing their tactic of harassing good Indian players as a "mind game". Their conduct in the tests they have played remind me of how 12 year olds cheat in "street cricket" in India, falsely claiming they caught the ball "cleanly", pressurising umpires and batsmen refusing to walk, even after knowing they are out. The Aussies have made sure that cricket is no more a game of gentlemen-sportsmen enjoying themselves while providing enjoyment to others through skill and fair play. The Indian Premier League, I hear, is seeking to sign up some Aussie players. They should wonder now, "if they would lose money through the unpopularity the Aussie team has earned with the Indian Public. Will products the Aussie players endorse be boycotted by the Indian Public?

but the bcci

I agree with most of the comments made that Harbajan is right and also agree with the manager that this is just a mind game. But I doubt the BCCI will take this matter seriously and am sure they will say that this is just a game. Thats also because they are getting fattened by the money that is poured into the board. Come on India where is your patriotism. I am sure India would have been in a better position had it been ruled by the British instead of lowly and greedy people.
