Practice Match: Jaffer's 92 puts India at 211/3

Canberra, January 10:: Out of form opener Wasim Jaffer struck a patient 92-run knock to guide the Indians to 211 for three at tea on the first day of their three-day practice match against ACT XI at Manuka Oval on Thursday.

Jaffer, who struck eight fours and two sixes during his 191-ball innings, fell just before the break, leaving Rahul Dravid (48) and Yuvraj Singh (0) at the crease.

While Jaffer enhanced his chances of getting picked for the third Test against Australia in Perth, the other opening contenders in the team -- Virender Sehwag (24) and Dinesh Kaarthick (25) -- looked out of touch.

Sehwag scratched his way to 24 from 49 balls with one four against a nondescript home attack before driving wildly at a delivery and getting caught overhead in the slips.

Sehwag's innings was characterised by umpteen swishes, which connected little.

Kaarthick, however, appeared in better form before he slashed a delivery, which rose more than he expected.

Jaffer then took over and played several typically graceful cover drives and flicks during his four-hour innings.

Dravid -- the other Test opener in this series -- came to bat at number four and with the clear intent of having a go at most deliveries.

Dravid's unbeaten 48 came in 75 balls and was studded with six fours.

Jaffer holed out to mid-on just before the tea break off left-arm spinner Mark Higgs.

Earlier, the Mumbai-player was hit painfully on his right fingers by Richard Sherlock early in his innings before settling down to hit 50 from 96 balls with four fours and a six.

Collusion between Umpires and Ponting Squad
by S. N. Verman on 2008-01-11 03:37:16.065756+05:30
There has been obvious collusion between the two umpires and the Ponting squad. Several wrong decisions were given by the umpires against the Indian team. The blatant ones were in the case of Ganguly and Dravid. After those wrong decisions, no interest was left even for the hosting spectator galleries. The cricket test match was 'fixed' even to the blind eye, and the host team was playing a mockery of the cricket game. Does this team have any face to play such games outside their home country? Their runs scored are all illegitimate and should go off the record. Rather the whole test match at Sydney should be washed out and the blame should lie with the so-called home team. The Aussies have destroyed the fair name of cricket, abused the umpiring and tarnished their own image for decades to come just to get the fake decision. The best thing for the Indians is to pull out. In order to save the fair name of cricket and their own face, the Indians should pull out without a whisper! The Aussies claim themselves as the strongest team in the world. They have demonstrated their strength with the help of umpires, scoring big with the help of umpires, demolishing the rival team with the help of the umpires, celebrating their fake victory with the help of the umpires. Is it really the game of cricket which the Aussies were playing? If this is tea, bring me coffee, and if this is coffee, bring me tea. Allow these teams to play another series, I am sure, the game of cricket will be buried on the Aussie's soil!
