'Perth triumph impressive but Kolkata was more special'

New Delhi, January 19:: Former India captain Kapil Dev lauded Anil Kumble's men for beating the odds to end Australia's winning run in Perth but felt the victory, though impressive, pales in comparison to the 2001 Kolkata-Test triumph under Sourav Ganguly.

"It is a great victory at that, though I consider India beating Steve Waugh's team in Kolkata was a greater one," Kapil said.

The former all-rounder, however, made it clear that Saturday's victory had its own special place because of the extraordinary circumstances under which it was achieved.

"Today's win is a great and brilliant victory coming under extraneous circumstances. It is a win that boosts the pride of every Indian because every chip was down and against India's favour," he said.

Kapil said the Indians were the underdogs going into the match but did well to come out trumps.

"Any cricketer at world level, be it Indian or otherwise, would not have given even 10 per cent chance to India before the match," he said.

How wrong are they

Its crazy reading the comments about how people interpret a remark made by Kapil. The euphoria of the perth test match is tremendous the victory sweet and highly deserving and its possible that this is what clouds our judgment here. A great test victory fought and won under testing conditions in Australia... however not one century in the match a few dubious decisions. Why should anyone feel Kapil is trying to crate a rift here...dumbfucks thats not what was meant...so, Kapil say onething and Gavaskar says another, now what ever in the rabbits hole has that got to do with Ganguly and Kumble? Surely I think...few more victories like the one at Perth and you wouldnt even recollect this one am sure...but never would anyone forget that match at Kolkata ever...simply for the the beauty that was and also for that very very special Laxman...I'd watch that victory at Kolkata anyday...and stop whining and reading between the lines...even a fish never gets in trouble if it keeps its mouth shut.

Victory in Kolkotta was in front of a massive Indian crowd, with a motivating captain , while it was a motivated team playing how to win with decency .After the lies and pitfalls in Sidney this victory should be hailed as one among the best games India has played

Kapil, go for a hike or play golf as you are apt to now ... instead of joining others in ensouraging Team India you are indulging in the Brit pllicy of divide and rule by trying to place and wedge between Ganguly and Kumble. You are outdated, out of sync and forgotten how much cricket has developed since your world cup win..go play golf with Wassim Akram

Kapil is wrong

Even though Kapil is the greatest Indian Cricketer, he is dead wrong here. Both Sourav and Kumble are gutsy captains, but with different styles. Kumble is the quiet leader and Sourav is more like the Australians, an eye for eye, a tooth for a tooth. They cannot be compared. Together they are a formidable team.
