'Oz media demeaning Appeals Commissioner's office'

Posted online: Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at 1742 hrs IST

Mumbai, January 30:: The BCCI on Wednesday described the Australian media's attack on the 'reprieve' to Harbhajan Singh in the racial abuse case as "demeaning and insulting" to the office of the appeals commissioner while insisting that it was a "fair trial".

"As far as BCCI is concerned we went according to the ruling of the ICC. The ICC had appointed Appeals Commissioner Justice John Hansen who is a respected High Court judge in New Zealand. So to find fault and criticise his decision is demeaning and insulting to the office of the Appeals Commissioner," BCCI Chief Administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty said.

The Australian media called it a 'Cricket's day of Shame' and reported that Cricket Australia caved in to India's muscle flexing as it was anxious to save the tri-series.

Reports also claimed the Australian players were "frustrated" and dismayed after Harbhajan got away with a fine.

"If India wanted to use its money power there would have been other ways to follow instead of following the procedure set up by the ICC," Shetty said.

"Judge's decision was based on the fact that there was no video or audio recording of the offensive words supposed to have been uttered by Harbhajan. Mike Procter's finding that Sachin Tendulkar could not have heard Harbhajan was also disapproved," he said.

Need to discipline Indian cricketers
by P.P. TALWAR on 2008-02-01 22:31:23.295849+05:30
By announcing its verdic by the the Appeals Commissioner appointed by the ICC, it has been clearly brought out that the past record of Harbhajan Singh being penalised for similar offences was not produced before the Appeals Commissioner. Had the past record been producd before the Appeals Commissioner, Harbhjan singh would have been penalisd more severely. This fact can not be denied by the BCCI. Without getting involved in unnecessary charges and counter charges, BCCI should strictly discipline Harbhajan singh also sreesanth whose behaviour on the cricket field is questionable. Harbhajan singh may have been let off lightly now, but this stigma of misbehaviour on the crickt field during international cricket matches will haunt him for the rest of his cricket career.

Disgraceful

Australia is the world's proudest sporting nation, and its greatest cricketing nation. We come out of this row with our heads held high. It is clear now that racism is only possible when it is perceived by someone from the subcontinent. Indian cricket should be ashamed. Have you produced a wicketkeeper better than Gilly? A bowler better than Warne? Anyone better or even close to Bradman? No, you've only produced a bunch of pampered fools who are shocked to find themselves inferior to the baggy greens in every conceivable way, and respond by calling on racism and their country's financial clout. World cricket had better have a good look at itself, and soon. Because the BCCI may rule the game, but even it will find itself in trouble when the game dies

'Oz media demeaning Appeals Commissioner's office'

This tour has been extremely traumatising. The events that followed have further aggravated things and the non-acceptance of the judgement by teh Aussie-team is even further proof that if they do not get what they want, they will go all out to create a bad environment. They are certainly not a team worth playing with. World Champions, them? YEs, but not in cricket, they are so in being the cry baies and the most non-sportive players of the world. They have irredeemably demeaned the spirit of cricket. ICC should look into the attitude of Aussie cricketers and punish them suitably. The players have not once questioned themselves - who provked, how etc. All they think they heard is Bhajji saying something. And nothing else? Very convenient, isn't it? Grow up boys. BCCI was right in wanting to take the team back. Fair is fair, even if it hurts the Aussie team and their over-bloated egos.

Having read much of OZ media coverage of this "Seething-Symonds" fiasco, I agree with BCCI's views. Judge Hansen's sound judgment has not convinced the populist media here. From the start they paid no attention to Symonds' gratuitous and extreme provocation of Harbhajan. They assumed Harbhajan was guilty, had uttered the "M" word, which, to them,is clearly a racist word. Given the hatred towards Harbhajan, the victim marked out by Ponting-Symonds, I feel relieved the OZ media have so far not done to Bhajji what the OZ police did last week to Ian Ward, an aboriginal elder. They put the 53 year old in the back of an unventilated, windowless van and drove him for 4.5 hours to some court hearing. Ian Ward died, perhaps, a slow death due to asphixiation inside the van in 40 degrees heat. He arrived dead. Many aboriginals have died in Australian prisons, often found hanging in their prison cells. Amazing, isn't it this concern over the "M" word and the "appalling racism" implied by it? There is not going to be much joy for India playing this present Aussie team. Better to forget them.

This is so true..I am in Australia right now and the news is so missleading they don't show the entire issue and only stress in things like Harbajan is free or The Judge side if he knew about his previous record he would have punished Harbhajsn more severly, it's just crazy they just keep provoking the Aussi people to take a action againt the Indian Team.
