Oz domination reminiscent of '83 WI

Nagpur, October 13:: The intensity shown by Australia in the ODI series in India is drawing comparisons with the great West Indies side following their shock defeat in the 1983 World Cup final.

The common factor in the two series is that they immediately followed World Cups, with 50-over champions and favourites Australia losing to surprise winners India in last month's inaugural Twenty20 edition.

Clive Lloyd's West Indies, chasing a third successive World Cup crown, slipped at the final hurdle against India in 1983 when they failed to reach a modest victory target.

Stung by criticism and keen for revenge, they ruthlessly swept aside India 5-0 in the ODI series on their tour later that year.

Australia arrived in India keen to avenge their Twenty20 semi-final defeat.

Ricky Ponting's men are one win away from sealing the seven-match series which they lead 3-1 with two games left.

The opening match was washed out and the sixth will be played on Sunday.

Barring a slip-up in the fourth game, Australia's domination has been complete. They crushed the hosts by nine wickets in the fifth match in Baroda on Thursday after dismissing India for a paltry 148.

"It (defeat) hurts the big teams," former India seamer Balwinder Sandhu, who played in the 1983 World Cup and the subsequent series against West Indies, said.

"Especially champion sides which have been on the top for long, it hurts them more. West Indies was the top team then and we beat them. They came back with a vengeance," he added.

Swinging Delivery

Sandhu, remembered best for the swinging delivery that knocked back Gordon Greenidge's off-stump in the World Cup final, was not surprised by Australia's ruthless displays.

"All champion teams think alike, the basic characteristics remain the same," he said. "They are showing no mercy on us, that's how the game should be played."

The build-up to the series stemmed back to the Twenty20 semi-final, according to Australia skipper Ricky Ponting.

"We had a little bit of banter happening on the field that day and I think that spilled over to when we arrived here," Ponting said, referring to verbal exchanges between the teams.

"I don't think we were the ones doing the talking at all at the start of the series.

"I am really satisfied with what we have done -- 3-1 up in the series now and a couple of games to go. We are in a pretty good position."

Only thing which matter in a cricket game is the WIN. Nobody will remember whether India has won a world cup earlier, if they lose this series to Australia. But If India wins this series then it will/or can be compared with other wins. BTW a great player/team never loses its temprament and abusive behaviour is always used by the weaker one. If India never displayed abusive behaviour earlier then it does not means that they were incapable of doing so. How much strength does a person require to speak f*** word. It only shows that despite being underdogs they are trying to WIN games consistently, and that too without being abusive.

Acyually Ponding should be banned from playing cricket.cricket is a gentlemen game and every player should obey the rules of game , he is just taking catches from the ground and appealing for it. For this mode of behavour is not suit for the game. he should be punished for 5 test matches at least.

Better donot compare WI with OZ. It is like comparing Apples with Shit. These guys are worst in their attitude and doesn't posses sportsman spirit. WI team (Loyd team) was very decent and well behaved team and most importantly, every member in that team were rich in sportsman spirit.

I cannot fail to marvel at the ignorance of some people inthe world. How many times has Sachin walked? And Ganguly? The WI were guilty of calling McDermott a "gutless honky". But's that OK is it? Ambrose purposefully bowling bouncers off 18 yards in Perth at tailenders - do you recall that? Sharma not walking in Sydney when he nicked it to 1st slip-remember? I don't want our team to be loved. I want it to be feared. We play violent body contact sports in our winter - that is how our cricketers grow up. Compare the upbringings of India's elite cricketers. That would explain the pathetic ground fielding, throwing ability and running between the wickets of the majority (Tendulkar and Sewhag excepted).Let's look at the disciplinary records of both countries. India leads by a long way in reports and suspension. Australia is about 4th. We will not elaborate on match fixing will we? I played in the Caribbean against West Indians. I would say they are the most rascist I have ever come across (worse than those from SA!!!). Ask the average West Indian what they think of Indians-you might get a shock!!!! If Australia was kicked out of world cricket INDIA MIGHT FINALLY WIN A WORLD CUP (their 2nd after a very long wait!!!!) Cry babies-harden up!!!

It is very clear from the recent test how Aussies play their cricket and what type of cricketers they have. They may be good in cricket, but they lack sportman's spirit to play the game. In this view, one cannot compare WI with Aus. WI;s were truely great with their cricket and had real sportman's spirit. On contrary, Ricky leading from the front by not having true sportman spirit by way of honestly going back to pavilion when he nicked the ball and got out. In addition it is surprising to see that, fellow asussies cricketers wait for umpire decision when they caught in first slip. Most UGLY and they must be banned from cricket as they are not playing cricket with true spirit of the game. It is high time BCCI pulls out the team in protest against ICC

Ravishankar forgets that Ponting immediately refused to claim a catch, and that he walked before given out in the second innings.Another thing...in a Test in the West indies in the 1990s Dean Jones was bowled by a no ball. He did not hear the call and started to walk off the ground. A WI player picked up the ball and broke the stumps. The "great" Viv Richards refused to call him back. Was that within the spirit of the game? Did the Australians have a hissy fit and threaten to go home? When Tendulkar went out to bat in both innings in Sydney he was greeted by a tumutuos standing reception by the crowd. He has repaid this honourby texting the BCCI suggesting that the team be recalled, thereby denying cricket lovers in Perth and Adelaide (and the world via television) the pleasure of good cricket. Yes, the Aussies are arrogant...as have all teams that have been on top for any length of time. I have been following cricket for over 50 years and I don't like some of what is going in the Australian team; but neither do I like the way the BCCI is using its financial muscle to blackmail the ICC.Cricket is too important and too wonderful to be spoilt by the odd bit of bad sportsmanship (usually brought on by the singleminded passions of the contest) or the political play of the national Boards.

Ponting got a big inside edge onto his pad in the 1st innings and didn't complain when the umpire sent him on his way. If this didn't happen, he may have got 150 odd not out like Symonds

PONTING DID NOT COMPLAIN
by Sunny on 2008-01-09 20:28:04.662141+05:30
Dear Mike,Ponting had no face to complain he was already enjoying his second free of cost batting . Thanks to Benson .He was declared not not caughtbehind in the bowling of Ganguly when on seven. He would have otherwise not even gone to double figure.
