"It's all white here" was the controversial slogan used by Otago Cricket to promote the match scheduled December 11 to 15 in the city of Dunedin. Official explanation was that it was meant to ignite fans' interest in Test cricket – played in all white gear.
"We just wanted a catchy phrase to help sell the game. It was all based around the association of the colour with cricket," Otago cricket chief executive Ross Dykes told 'Otago Daily Times'.
However, the promotion was dubbed racist by many and former West Indies and New Zealand player Sam Guillen described it as a "ridiculous idea".
"I know exactly how the players will feel. The first thing that will go through their mind is it's white against black which should never come into sport," the wicket-keeper, who played five Tests for the West Indies before immigrating to New Zealand and playing three Tests for his adopted country, said.
Rattled by the backlash, Dykes said he sent out e-mails to the West Indies team manager and the chief executive of the West Indies Cricket Board to explain the campaign and apologise if any offence was caused.
"I respect the opinions of others who may well think that it is insensitive. To those people I apologise," he said.
