It's veiled blackmail, ICC can’t let BCCI run the game: Oz media

Sydney, January 8:: BCCI's threat to pull out of the ongoing tour is a "veiled form of blackmail" and the ICC should not succumb to the Indian Board and let it usurp the governing body's role, the Australian media said on Tuesday.

Cricket writers here felt the Indian team's grievances against controversial umpire Steve Bucknor may be "genuine" but their threat to pull out should be given the "harsh response it deserves."

"India's threat to boycott the Australian tour has come down to a battle of who runs cricket - India or the ICC," Robert Craddock wrote in The Daily Telegraph.

"If the ICC buckles and overturns the Harbhajan verdict because of Indian pressure, it may as well shut its doors in Dubai and cease to exist," he said.

"If the ICC feels Harbhajan was worth suspending, it must not crumble in the face of a subcontinental blackmail from the world's most powerful cricket nation," it said.

He, however, sympathised with the Indian "genuine" grievances against umpire Steve Bucknor, who has been replaced by New Zealand's Billy Bowden for the third Test in Perth.

"India want Steve Bucknor sacked from the next Test in Perth and so he should be. Every grievance India have against him is genuine."

"But India's suspension of the tour while they wait for an appeal on the suspension of Harbhajan Singh is a veiled form of blackmail and must be treated with the harsh response it deserves," he said.

"If the Harbhajan verdict stands - as it should – and India abandon the tour, then so be it. Their nation will be in disgrace, their team retreating as men who cowered in the face of substantial adversity," he said in a harsh comment.

Hue and cry by liers

Harbhajan has been accused of "racist" behavior by Australian team members whose truthfulness itself is under serious question. There is neither any proof of same nor any history of any Indian (not only cricketers) involved in racist behavior. If Indian cricketers and public is racist against "only Australian cricketers" in whole world then it shows untruthfulness of this bunch of fifteen people. The author also seems suffering from narrow vision. The charges laid by Symonds are clearly false and sheer tactics for demoralizing Harbhajan and Indian team and nothing to do with racism or anything of such sort. Equally irresponsible behavior has been displayed by the Match-refree also.

Fair. Is it?

The real reason why the Aussies want the umpires' direct verdict (rather than the referral system using third umpire using the aid of Technology) is that they like the human element. Why? Because they are the best side in the world at capitalizing on the let-offs provided by the umpires. How? well, they do not seem to have the sense of guilt. Now wonder how they get fantastic averages, wins, records, ego and so on?This is not to deny their obvious talents (skills, team spirit, commitment, strength, stamina etc). The trouble is they also carry a lot of other skills unrelated to cricket. One is Sledging (also known as Mental Disintegration, made famous by Steve Waugh). This should have been banned a long time ago. If the Aussies are so keen on using this talent, the ICC can organize a separate tournament and no doubt, they would add another trophy in their collection. The other talent is Acting: When they snick one to the keeper (and even to slips) and the opposition team appeals to umpires, they stick to their crease like leeches, pretending nothing has happened and fooling the umpires. This kind of performances deserve Oscars and Hollywood would be a better place for them.

Poor OZ Press
by Jayakar Dalavai on 2008-01-08 16:57:16.557501+05:30
What hypocrisy! The same Aussies would do any thing to win and take credit for the win. Ponting knew very well that Ganguly's snick hit the grass and he deliberately lied to get Ganguly out of the way. And look at Dravid's dismissal; how can you even justify an appeal? They appealed and he was out. Even Ponting deliberately tried to influence the umpire by standing there. Was it not worthy of a penalty?Who is daunting the umpires and swaying the match referee and still complaining of veiled blackmail? Australian press should reprehensibly look into their own teams virtues before pointing fingers at India. They are known worldwide for their frolics on the field. What was said and not said by Bhajji no one heard. Can any man with dignity take it lying down? Yes… India is a powerful cricket nation; people love Indian cricket team and would not hesitate to chip in 2.3 million to pull out of the tour if that undermines nation’s honor.Wake up Australian press… don’t act like your players on the field.

So Mr. Robert Craddock how do you had felt if the coins would have overturned? Must be justifying all these as Mr. Ponting and comany is doing now!Why are you questioning Mr. Robert Craddock? It is time to find the answer within yourself. Hope God can help you!Blessings!Anupamr
