India proved their No. 2 status: Ponting

Adelaide, January 28:: After scraping past a spirited India to win the engrossing home Test series, Australian captain Ricky Ponting and his retiring deputy Adam Gilchrist said Anil Kumble and his teammates have confirmed their status as the second best team in the world.

Ponting said though his team won the Border-Gavaskar trophy after winning the four-match series 2-1, India could return home their head held high.

"It was an enjoyable series, a hard-fought contest over the last one month. India played some very good cricket and proved that they are the No. 2 team in the world," Ponting said.

Gilchrist, who hung up his gloves after the Test, said though his side had surrendered the Ashes to an England team in 2005, the Indian side under Kumble was second only to Australia.

"This team is right up there. Maybe we lost the Ashes in 2005 to an England side that was a terrific combination but this Indian side is even better," Gilchrist said.

According to him, new crop of fast bowlers had lent balance to the Indian side, which looked formidable even when playing abroad.

You know the truth
by testkills on 2008-01-29 04:00:34.043548+05:30
you can shove the trophy you know where. The point you are missing is - you thought you were the best and now you know you are not. Doesn't matter who has the trophy and who won the Sydney test - you know the truth you are not the best anymore. Any further argument against your own heart will only go on to add to the insult.

Here's the truth..... Australia 'v' India total test results...Tests played In India 36:, Aus win 12, India win 11, draws 12, tied test 1,.... Tests Played in Australia 35, Aus win 22, India win 5, draws 8.... India it was a good win in Perth but lets not get ahead of yourself,, these stats show how far behind you are, Australia is even ahead of you on your home soil. 17 wins from 56 tests away from India in the last 10 years shows India has a long way to go.

Australia Still Number 1
by Kevin on 2008-01-29 03:50:53.173542+05:30
The Indian public should stop whinging. Games are won on the field not burning effigies in the streets.By the way India should be the best team. One billion people compared to Australia's twenty million. If the populations were even we would really destroy you :)

Cheating
by Irfan on 2008-01-28 19:10:00.699584+05:30
They are number one in cheating and we Indians are number one in forgiving and forgetting. if we would have sydney test, with that morale we could have won the series by 3-1. What do you say

India should learn ro play, not talk.
by Sreenath on 2008-01-28 21:06:50.785823+05:30
I think we should accept the fact that Australia is the best team, after all. Would India have even tried to score in second innings if it had batted fourth in Perth? No way. It is true sledging should have no place in cricket, but to brand Australia team as "cheat" is grossly unfair. Let us learn to play agressively, and then talk. What happened to our much touted Yuvraj and Dhoni? Let us not be cry babies. They won the series, that is it. Our famed batting line up is just that, famed! Not performing when it matters. So cool it off!

Sanjay a sore loser
by Brian on 2008-01-28 17:47:59.644951+05:30
How are we cheats Sanjay?, Australia shows no mercy on the cricket field and you call us cheats for it yet you are crying that your own team should play the same way. so instead of blaming the Indian cricket board and anyone else you care to think of just accept India is not good enough and with support from fans like you who will stab them in the back at any opportunity they will never win while looking over their shoulder for the likes of you.

So till you win another test match then you can say you are winners, the last match was a draw because Aussie played it slow
