India create history Down Under, win tri-series

Reuters

Posted online: Tuesday , March 04, 2008 at 1731 hrs IST

Sydney, March 4:: India ended their tour of Australia on a high note when they beat the hosts by nine runs on Tuesday to win their best-of-three finals series 2-0.

Sachin Tendulkar scored a superb 91 and paceman Praveen Kumar went on to capture four wickets as the tourists followed up Sunday's six-wicket win in Sydney with a thrilling victory at the Gabba in Brisbane.

The Australians, who also lost 2007's tri-series finals at home to England, recovered from a terrible start to give themselves a glimmer of hope when James Hopes (63) and Matthew Hayden (55) made half-centuries, only to come up short.

Tendulkar just missed out on back-to-back centuries after helping India post 258 for nine after they won the toss and batted first.

The master batsman followed up his unbeaten hundred in Sydney with a patient display to set India on the road to victory.

The tourists were heading for a much bigger total when Tendulkar and Robin Uthappa (30) piled on 94 for the first wicket before Australia's bowlers struck back.

Part-time spinner Michael Clarke (3-52) captured three wickets, including the prize scalp of Tendulkar, while paceman Nathan Bracken (3-31) also picked up three wickets in the frantic final few overs.

Tendulkar was untroubled as he cruised to his half-century off 70 balls but missed out on his hundred when he misjudged a delivery from Clarke and spooned a catch to a diving Ricky Ponting at mid-on.

LOW-ORDER COLLAPSE

Yuvraj Singh made a run-a-ball 38 in a 54-run stand with Tendulkar but their dismissals triggered a lower-order batting collapse.

The Indians lost six wickets for 50 runs in the last 11 overs after looking as though they would get closer to 300.

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni kept the tail wagging with 36 from 37 deliveries but received little support from his team mates as the Australian bowlers stemmed the run flow.

The Australians made a terrible start to their run-chase when they lost three wickets in the first nine overs.

Adam Gilchrist, in his final appearance before retiring from international cricket, was caught behind for two off the third ball of the innings then Ponting (one) and Clarke (17) quickly followed.

Hayden and Andrew Symonds steadied the innings with a fourth wicket partnership of 89 before they both departed in the same over.

Hayden was run out at the non-strikers end for 55 and Symonds was trapped LBW by Harbhajan Singh for 42.

Mike Hussey and Hopes kept Australia in the hunt with a stand of 76 but the wickets began tumbling as the world champions were forced to take risks to reduce the required run-rate and they were bowled out for 249 in the last over.

Well done Dhoni and team India. Enjoy your victory. It is a well desrved one. It was a treat to watch a team effort. The younmembers deserve even more praise for displaying such a measured game, at the same time giving every bit of energy and force to the game. Pyush Chawals was superb. Praveen kumar was just magic. Sachin seems to have come out of his bad patch.

Nothing special about India beating Austrailia,The rot in India is the reason why austrialians could ever beat us.
by Sanjay on 2008-03-07 01:56:31.086012+05:30
I don't see anything special about beating Austrailia, except the selector were under pressure from ICL to do some merit based selection. I agree a nation of billion people not beating tiny Australines talks about the rot in the system. If merit based selection existed Austrailia could never hope to beat India. I hope reform occurs to BCCI.

Still number 1
by Brian on 2008-03-05 04:36:20.984493+05:30
Well played India good win in the ODI's, 11 games played on tour against Australia, 4 wins to India, 1 draw and 1 no result, but then again 5 wins to Australia 2-1 in the tests and 1 nil in the 20/20, so it looks like Australia won the series.

Sachin made almost all the runs in the finals and he will retire soon. Don't get too far ahead of yourself VVH, India can claim number one after it has dominated world cricket for a while like Australia has. By the way, how many world ODI world cups do you have?

Brian is another example of australia's stupidity and fake agility. Indians beated australians in their own country inspite of australian media's targeting of indian players unnecessarily.Kudos to our team !! and f** for brian.Come on India!!!

by Brian on 2008-03-06 03:33:25.514172+05:30
Div is another example of a racist Indian, you won a ODI final big deal you would think you have won the world series three times in a row, but you never will, don't forget DIV while india played great cricket we won 5 games India won 4 games out of the 11 played.

SORE WINNERS
by waxer on 2008-03-05 03:56:34.11159+05:30
How ironic that so many comments here are saying Australia is racist. It was your "hero" harbhajan who started it by being racist against the only black man in the Australian squad. Then he lied about it. Everyone knows he DID call Symonds a monkey. The crowds were on harbhajans back because HE is the racist. To all who think this means India is now number one- look what happened to England after winning last time, who won the world cup after that? Good luck to you- you used every trick in the book to get a win, but it paid off- intimidation of umpires, racism, dirty accusations, bullying by bcc. but you got your win- hope you enjoy it, I have a feeling it will be short lived.

you are telling Mr Symond's is black. Pl note that Mr Harbajan is also black. Then, where is the question of rascism coming in between them. A win against Australia will not make India No 1. Aussies were the undisputed leaders of world cricket for pretty long time. But whatever may be the case a win is always a win and therefore India's win should be appreciated and congratulated. The culture of India and Australia is different. what appears to be correct for Australians need not be correct for Indians and viceversa. Hence it will be better for the cricketers to avoid unnecessary altercations on the ground to avoid the unhealthy condition which spoils the spirit of cricket. Any how we can forget the past and wait for the bright future. After all Ponting, Symond, Hayden and all others are very good cricketers. Simillarly Harbajan, Sreesanth and others are also good Cricketers. it is foolish to believe that they will not see eye to eye when they meet in future. So why we ordinary people should spit venom unnecssarily.

You are right, the Indian win should be applauded, but the bullying tactics of the BCC, the gutlessness of the ICC, the racism shown by Harbhajan, the hypocrasy shown by Kumble should not. I am responding to the continual accusations of racism in bloggs here. Yet there is continual racist comments here that you all ignore. I have seen bloggers here blatantly attack "black" people especially the "black" umpires, I have seen continual reference to our convict past. Your hypocrasy is unbelievable. I comment on this blog because there are many poor winners here who are trying to insult Australia. I just do not understand why our whole population is continually insulted here because of cricket. We don't insult Indian people per-say, sure there was some issues with your cricket team, but not the entire Indian population. As I have stated before, Indian people are particularly welcome here. Maybe you should have an honest look at the behaviour of your team. As to why Indian people would be racist against "blacks" We wonder the same thing. Perhaps this article may shed some light on it. http://www.ndtv.com/debate/showdebate.asp?show=1

Joking
by Arun on 2008-03-05 10:04:09.552363+05:30
Either you must be joking or don't have any clue of what had happened over there or you yourself must be a racist. Shame for your parents that they brought up an idiot like you. After all the evidences still you are arguing that Harbhajan called him monkey. As far as the Indians, they see Symmonds as an australian and don't think whether he is black or white. Only you guys are mentioning him as black australian. See there is racism in your own sentence. So stop giving comments as if you were a saint. Australia's No: 1 is been achieved by all those things which you have mentioned in your sentence and not the Indians. You yourself knew that. Just don't argue for the sake of arguement you obnoxious little weed.

Hey Waxer..You aussie are habituated liars. You were the ones who started this sledging and kept doing it till it screwed yourself. Remember what your 'most respected player' Hyden told about Ishant sharma. As far as racist remarks, you yourself are admitting that the spectators at sydney were racist at Harbhajan. The fact is you guys are given back in the labguage you speak and think tht that language is ur birthright. Now accept defeat and try to be better human beings. Remember no matter what any deciet has come to an end it has come to and end now that Aussies like you are taught a big lesson

I did not admit spectators were being racist. Harbhajan was being called a wanker, this is the same term we called many players. It is a light hearted jibe and usually only taunted to good players- in a way it is a compliment. As to lessons. The only lesson I have learned from the INdian cricket tour is that the BCC is a bunch of bullies, racism is accepted by the Indian team, Kumble is a hypocrite. The sahem is that all this crap overshadowed some of the best quality cricket for many years. I mean, really all that sooky stuff about going home with the sulks because you didn't agree with an independant umpires verdict- come on, that is so childish.
