'ICC should urge Australia not to cancel Pak tour'

Karachi, January 4:: Former Pakistan captain Rameez Raja has urged the ICC step in and convince Australia not to cancel their March tour of his country, saying the onus was on the governing body to make sure that members fulfill their international commitments.

Rameez also declared Pakistan a perfectly safe country to host international matches with reference to the doubts being expressed by Australia over the security situation in Karachi.

“I think the International Cricket Council has a big role to play in convincing teams who are reluctant to tour Pakistan. The PCB must also remain proactive,” he said.

He said Pakistan was safe as any other country for cricket and no country could guarantee it would remain free of terrorist and militant incidents.

Rameez, meanwhile, also urged the PCB to elevate Misbah-ul Haq to Test captaincy, while retaining Shoaib Malik as leader of the ODI side.

Rameez, who has also worked as chief executive of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in the past, said split captaincy was the solution to Pakistan’s leadership woes.

“The board should have Shoaib Malik leading the one-day team and Misbah in charge of the test side,” he said.

The board has retained Malik as Test and ODI captain until the end of 2008 despite series losses to South Africa at home and than in India last month.

PCB said it had faith in Malik’s ability to develop into a successful leader of the team and would continue to support him.

But Rameez felt Misbah would prove to be a better leader at least in Tests as he was more mature.
