Fleming rules out taking over as NZ coach

Christchurch: Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has ruled out taking over as the next New Zealand coach, saying he neither has time nor the desire for the job.

New Zealand are without a coach since Englishman Andy Moles put in his papers last week after it came to light that the players were skeptical of his technical abilities.

Even though Fleming’s name, along with that of former India coach John Wright, was doing the rounds as the next coach of the team, Fleming himself shot down the idea.

“It is not my interest to coach internationally. I am very happy with the business side of things I am looking to set up and with my family life. I do not have the time (for coaching) and I do not have the desire,” Fleming told Radio Sport.

Apart from the demand of the job, Fleming said he was not comfortable coaching some of the players he played with.

“The group of players there now are too close to my (playing) era, and also my coaching ability is unproven,” Fleming said.

In absence of a coach, captain Daniel Vettori would shoulder additional responsibilities and it may continue until the new year when Pakistan tours New Zealand for three Tests starting on November 24.

Fleming coaches Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League but the left-hander said he was fine with the IPL commitment of only seven weeks a year.
