Don't sledge Sachin, rather befriend him: Warne

London, February 7:: Spin wizard Shane Warne feels sledging is a legitimate weapon in cricket but said it should not be used to wind up someone like Sachin Tendulkar, who a bowler should rather befriend.

"I do believe that sledging is a legitimate weapon as long as it does not become abusive. Foul language or an aggressive tone are signs of a frustrated player," Warne said.

"I found it an extremely effective tactic against an insecure batsman who could be intimidated. South Africa's Darryl Cullinan springs to mind as a good player who was not confident against Australia, particularly leg spin. On the other hand, with Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara, it was better to be friends and make them smile rather than wind them up," he wrote in his column for The Times.

Warne touched upon the issue in the wake of the racism row involving Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds.

"The sledging issue has become topical again after the Harbhajan Singh appeal - even being described as un-Australian by Michael Jeffery, the Governor-General," Warne said.

"I am not in a position to comment specifically on the Harbhajan case, but I do believe that sledging is a legitimate weapon," he said.

Sleding the mates!!!!
by Arun on 2008-02-08 03:27:00.022856+05:30
The trouble with all teams is they have not made sledging an art and also discuss as a team strategy. AS Austrelia did, they marked Bhaji who has explosivr temper (good for him) and playe a team game to blame him of racial abuse. Tell me what is Indian team strategy. Do they identify Shoaib, sldge him and if he hits back complain about him!! Team needs to mark opponents for batting weakness as well as character and attachk them with bowling as well as sledging strategy.

Aussies and Sledging
by Aisha on 2008-02-08 03:20:51.292315+05:30
Folks dont complain even if the aussies sledge as it is their birth right to do so. No one else can do the same. They call us Indians ie BCCI as controlling the game of cricket . They lost the case against Harbhajan and would have lost it in any court of law for lack of evidence. So they cary foul . Actually they want to flex their muscles and use their power to control and intimidate every one. Losers!

Sleding legitimate as per Warne
by JKS on 2008-02-07 21:24:28.856134+05:30
If Sledging is legitimate, aussie should also know that telling someone monkey is no way racial. It can never be a case that if Symonds abuses Harbhajan it is ok but Harbhajan replies in Kind the aussie idiots start crying foul. Warne you should preach your aussies specially Symonds and Ponting who would like to think that even if they continue to be on the wrong side they cannot be questioned.

Sledging/Cricket
by W Radhakrishna on 2008-02-07 21:14:45.960475+05:30
Sledging if done by Australian players are legitimate, if other than Australians it becomes violation of ICC regulations. It is also legitimate if intimidation is done by Australians against umpires but not others. The ICC should inculcate a sort of code of conduct to all participants on the field when game is being played.
