Don't play with Dravid's career: Kirmani

Jamshedpur, January 2:: Former wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani on Wednesday lashed out at the Indian team management in Australia for "playing with the career" of Rahul Dravid by pushing him to the opener's slot.

Kirmani felt Dravid has established himself as a dependable number three in the batting order and the team management's decision to send him as opener was not justified.

"Dravid has been consistently performing at no. 3 slot and he should have continued at it."

"It was not a right decision particularly when specialist opener Sehwag was in the squad," he said.

He said he had been taken aback by Sehwag's exclusion from the final eleven despite the right-hander having an impressive record in Australia.

Kirmani said he did not see any reason for having two spinners in the playing eleven on bouncy Australian pitches.

Questioning the commitment of current players, Kirmani said, "During our time, we used to play for the country and its pride. But, now the people are more inclined towards the game because of the money and glamour it involved."

To a question, he said golf has become an expensive sports and newcomers in this game were mostly from affluent families, who can afford it.

However, sports in general has become commercial, he added.

Citing the performance of Indian golfers like Jeev Milkha Singh and Jyoti Randhawa at international level, Kirmani said Indians have already made their presence felt at the international arena and the game have been attracting a lot of sponsors.

do not blame dada for dravid!!
by akroy on 2008-01-03 00:36:55.758088+05:30
what an insidious manoueuvre to hold dada responsible for dravid's performance. Well as many have already commented, it is Dravid's own mess. He has accepted an offer which he should not have, in order to avoid losing a place in the team, as everybody wanted to accommodate Yuvi. An opening position, especially against Aussies, require a seasoned practitioner. Clearly Dravid is an established No. 3, but not an opener. Simple and plain. But to defend him by brigning dada into the scenario is utter nonsense and rubbish. By going to a church does not make a christian. By being an "analyst" does not necessarily make a wise thinker either. The world knows that, on the other hand, it is the vicious liaison among Chappel, Dravid and More, which put a damper on dada's place even at the team, despite he being the most successful captain in India..

Dravid created his own mess!

Dravid is a great player. According to me only he and Kumble have the right temperament for a Test batsman! However, Dravid created his own mess! Nothing was forced on him. He opted to open when he himself was the Captain of the team; then why blame others? Laxman made it clear that he did not want to open (even after successful stints against Aussies as opener earlier on) and paid for it by being kept out of the team for several years. Dravid is afraid to lose his place and hence accepts anything thrown at him to preserve his place. He cannot bowl or field. Unfortunately he is Not a legend of the stature of Sachin either! You cannot have the cake and eat it too. Grow up Dravid!

I am a Test Analyst by profession and so without any bias, I wud have to say Please review atleast last 5 if not 10 years cricket history before propagating such balantly false and speculative comments.Dravid is obviously a great player, but he was in his carerr twice shieled by then team captain (one of them ganguly), Please note this is not a case of sacrificing Dravid, but more of either he plays in the available spot or gets left out, decision is his.

Why defend Dravid
by Partha M on 2008-01-02 23:13:24.381876+05:30
Why claim something that is not true? Your message is hundred percent biased. To defend Dravid for his terrible performance in the past many months, you bring up Saurav Ganguli as one of the reasons for his failure? The entire world knows the truth the extent of dirty politics of Dravid played to kill Ganguly's career. Besides, the truth of the matter is: Dravid is unable to perform for whatever the reasons may be and he should be removed from the team, until he comes back as Saurav did.

Do not play with dravid's career

Dravid did hisjobno other player came forward to opening to accomodate yuvi. And dravid being out of form asked to open batting that shows value of dravid in ind team.Dravid only batsman in ind team batted from No 1 to 7 in odis and test. Even master did not blast and tiger did not roar. master blaster wanted to open innings in odis and ganguly complained tha the missed many 100s in test batting up in order. but in test batted on regular slot still failed to perform.afraid to face lee johnson cleark with new ball with morning dies dravid knowing that vengi has agenda against him, opened innins and was at the crease atleast 11and half hr in first innings and 2 and half in second innigns faced new ballsdravid did not score runs but he was ther till 35th over in sencond innings but other 8 batsman out in 35 hrs between lunch to team..but in odis opening means batting is with field restriction no pressure of increasing runrate and enoubh balls to face...dravid accepted challenged and opening innings knowing that vengsarkar has an agenda against him. in test at least he stayed at wkt and for 2 hrs and played till 35 over in second innings other 8 wkts fell in less than 35 overs within session of lunch to tea. dravid survived at least on session.dravid was shufflled in batting order in odis before he was dropped..this did not happened to any other senior player.let tendulkar and ganguly open in test and make them bat in diff positions in five odisagainst aussies Why dravid has to face descrimination in batting order and made scpeagoat? If ganguly and tendulkar wants to open in odis why not in tests what about failure of jaffer, l dhoni yuvraj and harbajan wktless????
