Australia seal series win after 4th Test drawn

Adelaide, January 28:: Australia earned a 2-1 series victory over India on Monday after the fourth and final Test ended in a draw at Adelaide Oval.

With neither side in any position to push for a result, India opted to bat out the last day before their captains agreed to an early finish.

India, who needed to win the match to draw the series, finished the game on 269 for seven in their second innings and an overall lead of 232 runs.

The final day was dominated by India's dashing opener Virender Sehwag and the emotional retirement of Adam Gilchrist.

Australia's vice captain stunned the cricket world on Saturday when he announced he was quitting Test cricket at the end of the match, then one-day internationals in March.

Gilchrist capped his last day in Test cricket with two catches to take his final career tally to 416 dismissals, three days after breaking the world record for a wicketkeeper.

Sehwag thumped a brilliant 151 and occupied the crease for more than five hours, contributing more than half the Indian total. No other Indian batsman made more than 20, though most seemed content simply to bat for time rather than runs once the prospect of a result faded.

GLIMMER OF HOPE

There was never much chance of a result after both teams made in excess of 500 runs in their first innings, but Sehwag at least gave the Indians a glimmer of hope of getting far enough ahead to set up an early declaration on the last day.

The 29-year-old blazed his way to his 13th Test century off 123 balls before lunch but was forced to curb his attacking instincts when Rahul Dravid suffered a broken finger and India started losing wickets at regular intervals.

Dravid retired hurt on 13 when he was struck on the finger by a short-pitched delivery from express paceman Brett Lee, who was named player of the series.

Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly and Vangipurappu Laxman all fell cheaply, forcing Sehwag to adopt a more defensive approach.

Tendulkar, who was named man of the match after scoring a hundred in the first innings, was run out for 13 after a direct hit from Mitchell Johnson.

Ganguly went for 18 when he spooned a catch off Johnson to Mike Hussey at short cover, while Laxman fell for 12 when he glanced a catch off Lee to Gilchrist.

Lee captured a second wicket when he dismissed Mahendra Singh Dhoni for 20, brilliantly caught by Matthew Hayden in the slips, then Gilchrist caught Sehwag when he got a nick off Andrew Symonds.

Harbhajan Singh departed for seven, caught by Ricky Ponting off Brad Hogg, leaving Anil Kumble (nine not out) and Ishant Sharma (two not out) to bat out the last few overs before the skippers shook hands.

It is because of BCCI nonsense, that Aussie were not mercilessly beaten

Aussie are cheats, for the reason they win. ..............................BCCI did nonsenses by announcing dropping key players from team destroying the spirit of the Indian team, typical in helping the criminal Aussie, the coolie raj. Aussie is lucky that they have the favor of Indian government.

Sanjay, you obviously have the IQ of a papadam, so perhaps you could refrain from commenting in future as nobody wishes to read your dribble. You are the reason Indians get a bad name.

Austrailia played it slow as to have a draw, which means Aussies have not won since their defeat in Perth, so they are still loosers in my dictionary.

I am not offended by someone calling me a dalit, but if they called me an Aussie I will take that as a great offense because they are cheats.

India played it slow so Australia could not bat again because they knew they would lose.

You could never be an Aussie we don't accept trash, you would rather hide in the mass of a billion faces rather than be seen for what you are, a week little racist man like your cricket team, India's true racist behaviour will be seen by the world later this year when Australia tours there.

Aussie looser:Indians average run rate for the two inning were 3.27 verse austrailia's run rate of 3.11 for its first innings. So you are also Liar to say Indians played it slow
by Sanjay on 2008-01-30 13:36:30.899144+05:30
Yeah how India is racist?, They have/had a Sikh as PM, Muslim, as president, women as both president and vice-president, people from every state and region, also Dalit as a president. Really? Maybe you could explain how a monkey became a racist word, because we Indian don't get it? .......................................Besides you should look at your stats, yall played it slow and safe, not us. Aussie first inning 181 over, Your run rate 3.11 whereas Indian first innings 3.44 run rate in 152.5 over, It was kind of obvious that there was no time left for Indian inning and your chance. You got one six and three people made centuries, whereas Indians have one person making a century and have three sixes, our last innings we played for 90 over run rate 2.99, making the average run rate for the two innings 3.27 for the Indians still beating the slow and safe Australian run rate of 3.11 obviously no one was going to win and still we had wickets to play. So by simple math we only played 61 overs more in our second innings, does it sound that we were playing slow? Aussie are also liars, poor sports that do anything to win...............................Happy to see you try to win against India you looser, now you are calling us racist because you can’t win??

Fear
by Brian on 2008-01-28 14:20:36.309351+05:30
India showed their true fear of the Australian team today by not giving Australia a second bat, far from any side being in a position to win Australia would have won the match easy with a second innings.
